Furniture Care

Fabric Care
While you can't anticipate the guest who will spill his or her beverage or the child who will drip ice cream on your living room sofa, there are some basic upholstery care tips that will keep your furniture looking new longer:
  • Vacuum your upholstered furniture weekly, using a furniture brush and the extension that enables you to reach into corners for crumbs and dust.
  • Direct sunlight will fade your upholstery, so keep the furniture out of the direct rays. Rearrange the furniture in your room from time to time, so that constant use won't wear out one piece of furniture much more quickly than the others in the room.
  • Turn cushions and pillows around on a weekly basis to extend the life of the fabric.
  • Move houseplants and flowers away from contact with upholstery fabrics.
  • If you plan to paint, refinish that antique table, or put on nail polish, be smart and cover your upholstered furniture to protect from spills.
  • Before you try to remove a stain or soil from your upholstery, you should determine the type of fabric involved. (You'll find the code on the deck label. If not, call the store you bought it from.) These codes indicate the type of fabric involved - cotton, wool, silk, and so on - and suggest the best methods of cleaning and spot removal.
Leather Care
Proper care and preventative maintenance are vital to the life of your leather furniture.
  • Position all leather seating at least two feet from heating sources. Prolonged exposure to heat dries out leather.
  • Leather fades when exposed to sunlight, so keep leather seating away from direct light sources such as windows, skylights and open doors.
  • Practice preventative maintenance. Treat surfaces with the recommended Leather Master Cleaner or Leather Master Cream to improve the leather's resistance to soiling. Give special attention to high-use areas such as seats, arms and backs.
  • Fully clean and re- protect your leather furniture every six months. Always try the cleaning method in a hidden area first to test the results. Never use a hair dryer to speed drying unless recommended. When possible, let leather air dry after cleaning.
  • Vacuum weekly to remove dust.

Spots and Spills:
While leather initially repels most spills, they will be absorbed if not treated properly. Blot any liquids immediately with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge, then let air dry. If a spill is absorbed, it will dissipate over time as the leather naturally diffuses the stain.

Care Tips For Pure Aniline and Protected Aniline Leathers:
Take extra precautions to keep Pure Aniline Leathers away from direct sunlight as they are particularly sensitive to fading. To dust, lightly dampen a soft cloth with Leather Master Soft Cleaner and dust weekly. You will be able to fully remove dust particles from Pure Aniline and Protected Aniline Leathers, making them easier to live with for dust-sensitive people.

Preventative Care:
Apply Leather Master Protection Cream to the surface to help resist staining and soiling. Regular use of this cream will significantly improve the clean ability of Pure Aniline Leather and help prevent possible cracking of Protected Aniline Leather. Clean with Leather Master Soft Cleaner every six months to remove dirt and body oils. After cleaning, apply the Leather Master Protection Cream to restore the protection level.

Wood Furniture Care:
Quality wood furniture is a significant investment expected to last for generations. To maintain its beauty and help it last, wood furniture needs the right care. Hooker Furniture products are finished with two to three coats of lacquer for extra depth and long-lasting durability. The sheen, or gloss, of the finish ranges from high to low, depending on the piece or collection. The finish protects the wood and adds to its beauty. No finish is totally indestructible. But with regular care, the finish will last much longer, providing years of enjoyment to you. To protect and care for your furniture, we suggest the following:

  • Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight, as sunlight causes fading. Avoid extreme changes in temperature by arranging furniture away from radiators, heat and air vents and air conditioning units.
  • Avoid placing plastic or rubber materials (lamp bases, notebooks, placemats, etc.) on your furniture, as certain plastics contain ingredients that may damage the finish.
  • Periodically rotate accessories on furniture so they do not sit in the same spot all the time.
  • Use pads, cloth or felt to protect the furniture surface from plastic, rubber, hot dishes, beverages, bookends, flowerpots and vases.
  • Clean up spills immediately. Use a blotting rather than a wiping action. Water left over a long period of time will cause white spots in the finish. Alcohol, perfume, after-shave and medications can cause severe finish damage.
  • Use a protective pad when writing with a ballpoint pen on the furniture surface.
  • Lift and place objects rather than dragging them across the furniture surface.
  • Avoid placing furniture directly under windows.
  • We recommend dusting frequently with a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Clean the surface by rubbing in the direction of the grain.
  • We recommend polishing your furniture approximately every six months, using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and rubbing the polish in the direction of the grain.
  • Use a polish, not a wax, to clean your wood furniture. Waxes should be avoided because their regular use may result in a build-up of wax film on the surface of the furniture. Polishes contain detergents, emulsifiers and mineral oil. The detergents clean dirt from the furniture, the emulsifiers give it body to clean and last longer and the mineral oil is left behind as a barrier for dirt and moisture than could harm finishes. There’s no grit to harm the finish, no wax to build up and no silicone to raise the sheen and act as a barrier for touch-up and refinishing.
